讲座简介

Artificial Intelligence, of the sort displayed by Large Language Models and modern machine vision systems, does not exist in isolation. It will be used within systems for problem solving, knowlege acquisition and management, planning, and for many other purposes. To serve those purposes, it will need to improve the reliability and scope of the sorts of reasoning and knowledge-use processes which have underlain much of the progress of human civilisation, including mathematical reasoning, the scientific method, and philosophical and legal reasoning. It will also need to be surrounded by larger systems for maintaining goals, persistent context, problem-solving state and broad situational context, amongst others. Lastly, these systems will operated in cooperation with natural intelligences (including humans and animals) and organisational intelligences (including families, companies, civil organisations and ecosystems), and these interactions will have to be carefully designed for the safety and benefit of the individuals and organisations involved.  In this talk, I’ll outline this holistic view intelligence that underlies our Natural, Artificial and Organisational Institute (NAO Institute) at Waipapa Taumata Rau, The University of Auckland. And I’ll give some examples of how were working to improve both the base capabilities of AI systems, and their ability to operate in the human context.

Michael Witbrock    奥克兰大学计算机科学学院教授

Professor Michael Witbrock is a full Professor of Computer Science at The University of Auckland, leading the Strong AI Lab (SAIL) focused on machine learning, reasoning, and natural language understanding. SAIL is part of NAOI, a collaboration of researchers in Natural, Artificial, and Organisational Intelligence. Prof. Witbrock's research involves quasi-logical systems, deep learning architectures, and inference systems. He aims to develop practical "dense domain models" for comprehensive in-domain human-like reasoning. Alongside his technical work, he has an extensive publication record and actively contributes to AI entrepreneurship and the societal implications of AI advancements.

He has a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University. He is the former Vice President of Research at Cycorp, which is carrying out the Cyc project in an effort to produce genuine Artificial Intelligence. Before joining Cycorp, he was a principal scientist at Terra Lycos, working on integrating statistical and knowledge-based approaches to understanding Web user behaviour; he has also been associated with Just Systems Pittsburgh Research Center and the Informedia Digital Library at Carnegie Mellon.
